The Brief
The brief was to create a bright, contemporary kitchen that would feel completely integrated within a large open-plan living space. The room had fantastic natural light and generous proportions, so the kitchen needed to make a confident design statement without overwhelming the architecture.
The clients wanted a kitchen that was sleek, practical and sociable, with a large island at the centre of the space, plenty of hidden storage, integrated appliances and a relaxed seating area for everyday family life. Warm timber tones were important to soften the clean modern lines, while the overall look needed to remain calm, elegant and timeless.
The design
The design combines tall, handleless cabinetry in a soft neutral finish with rich smoked walnut accents, creating a beautifully balanced contrast. A full-height bank of units provides extensive storage and houses the ovens, refrigeration and larders.
The island is the main focal point of the room. Finished with a dramatic wrap around waterfall quartz worktop and walnut base with hidden storage, it provides a generous preparation area, a venting induction hob and informal seating. The cooking side is made up entirely of drawers giving super easy access to everything. The walnut breakfast bar adds warmth and creates a more relaxed zone for coffee, conversation or casual dining.
Along the back wall, the sink run sits neatly between the doors, making the most of the natural light while keeping the practical “Wet Zone” working area discreet. Open walnut shelving with integrated lighting adds character and display space, breaking up the cabinetry and introducing a softer, more bespoke feel.
The lighting was also carefully considered, with recessed ceiling lights, slim linear pendants and illuminated shelving all working together to create atmosphere as well as function.
How it worked out
The finished kitchen feels spacious, luxurious and very easy to live with. The combination of soft taupe handleless doors, quartz work surfaces and warm walnut gives the room a crisp modern look without feeling cold.
The large island works perfectly as the heart of the space, offering excellent preparation space while also becoming a natural gathering point for family and guests. The tall storage keeps the kitchen clutter-free, allowing the clean lines and beautiful materials to take centre stage.
It is a kitchen that feels both highly practical and effortlessly elegant — a bright, contemporary space with warmth, texture and plenty of everyday usability.
