The brief
We had to design and install one kitchen with two distinct purposes. Firstly, the kitchen had to be a family-friendly space that could cope with large-scale family life. But, just as importantly, it needed to double up as a commercial cooking space, fit for a professional chef. We needed to house a full suite of ovens, hobs and refrigeration plus lots of storage. The island also needed seating for five and the overall colour scheme and feel had to be on trend with a mix of dark grey and white, with some wood to add splashes of warmth and texture.
The design
A large, 4.5M island provided the centre-piece for the kitchen. It housed a large induction hob and Tepan Yaki at one end and then seating for 5 at the other end. To maximise storage the entire cooking side of the island is made up of drawers.
On the short wall, at the end, we housed two dishwashers and a double sink along with waste and recycling bins. To add visual interest, we layered white wall units with feature open shelf units in vintage oak.
The large bank of tall units features 2 full-size ovens, a micro combi, a warming drawer plus a full-height fridge and a full-height freezer. To soften the appearance of this bank we added some open shelves at the seating end of the island.
We were also asked to design and build a completely bespoke white shelving unit with integrated LED lighting for the opposite end of the kitchen.
How it worked out
Firstly, our clients love the space. Not only does it have a real ‘wow’ factor with all the lighting and the huge island. But it also works very effectively as a professional kitchen. It strikes a great balance, with loads of storage, lots of functionality and all wrapped up in a very subtle but classy looking kitchen. We like it a lot!
