The brief
Set within a lovely house, the kitchen was going into a new extension. The space for the kitchen was large, spanning both the existing house and the new extension. Our clients wanted a โbells and whistlesโ kind of a kitchen. Their wish list included a big island, two ovens, venting hob, separate integrated fridge and freezer, a coffee machine, a compact micro combi and two wine coolers!
They also wanted a separate breakfast cupboard with space for the toaster. In terms of the layout they wanted symmetry and simple lines.
The design
First, we settled on a symmetrical run of cabinets along the back wall. This was configured with tall units at either end of the run of base units. We used the tall units to house the ovens, refrigeration and larders. And then the base units in the middle took care of the sink, bins and dishwasher. Above the base units we added a run of contrasting concrete wall units with built in LED lighting.
For the island we focused on a run of drawer units, in which we housed the venting hob. This layout is tried and tested. You get to cook on the island enjoying the view and engaging with friends and family, and then as you cook, dirty pans etc are passed behind you to the back wall which houses the sink. On the back of the island, we incorporated the two wine coolers and space for the bar stools.
The final component in the kitchen is the breakfast station. Within this second bank of tall units we included the coffee machine and micro combi, with a double door breakfast pantry centered between them. Not only does this area add further storage but it keeps the cooking side of the kitchen separate from the drinks.
How it worked out
Black handleless cabinetry is incredibly striking, but it needs the right kind of room and the right kind of design to avoid the space feeling oppressive. This kitchen ticks both these boxes. The room is beautifully light and the use of lighter concrete units, combined with elegant Organic white quartz, lifts the space considerably. Itโs interesting how dark cabinetry, when combined with lighter worktops actually seems to make these elements seem even brighter, itโs a design staple for a reason, it just works.
As much as the simple colour scheme works so well, so does the layout. In terms of storage, usability and functionality itโs a 10/10. The breakfast pantry is a particular highlight, as well as the pair of wine coolers. Whether itโs a quite cup of coffee perched at the island, or a party with champagne flowing, this a great space and a really beautiful kitchen.
