The brief
Our clientโs were building a state of the art property on the Sussex coast and wanted a kitchen to reflect their modern, luxurious home. They wanted the kitchen to look more like furniture than a conventional kitchen whilst still packing in a wide range of functionality. They liked dark colours and had a keen interest in some amazing natural stone and marble.
The design
The space lent itself to an understated layout with a simple wall run and a feature island. Due to the big, vaulted ceiling we decided to take the cabinetry all the way up, closing off the gap and creating a truly built-in appearance.
At one end of the wall run sits a double width breakfast pantry, whilst at the other is full-height integrated fridge and larder. Centered between the tall units sits a venting hob with a nice open shelf detail and two flap door wall units.
To hide the ovens we put these on the island so they are mostly hidden from view. We also added the sink, boiling tap, a freezer, a dishwasher and further storage, to the island, making it both super functional and effortlessly elegant.
We settled on a black concrete door finish which not only looked and felt lovely but created the perfect backdrop to the amazing Blue Roma Quartzite worktops and splashbacks.
How it worked out
This a kitchen which has a big impact!!! Most striking is the stone and without doubt it is not for everyone but if you love this kind of thing then this kitchen is a great example of subtle, minimal design with a massive wow factor.
Quite apart from the stone, the technical intricacies of this kitchen are equally impressive. The full height cabinetry that follows the sloping ceiling. The double width pantry, the subtle floating shelf. Not to mention an island that is packed with functionality whilst still retaining true to the brief of looking more like furniture. The complexity of the installation is also worth mentioning, for example when working with natural stone the worktops need additional support for overhangs and hob cuts. We achieved this by using hidden steel plate. A fun hidden detail and it just goes to show what it takes to create such apparently simple elegance.
The end result is pretty stunning.
